◇日豪共同慰霊式（港内）／洋上慰霊祭（War grave）
期日：平成２６年９月１３日（土）
ダーウィン周辺で戦死された方及びダーウィン沖で沈没した潜水艦「伊－１２４号」の乗組員に対する慰霊式を実施しました。
今から約７０年前、日本とオーストラリアは敵味方に分かれ戦い、ダーウィンでも多くの戦死者が出ました。この慰霊式では、日豪両国のそれぞれの国のために戦った英霊に哀悼の意を表し、とこしえの永眠をお祈りするとともに、日豪両国の今後の更なる友好を誓い合いました。

本日、ここに私共はオーストラリア海軍主催多国籍間共同海上訓練を終え、ダーウィンを出港するにあたり、過ぐる大戦のさなか、この海域において祖国のために身を挺して奮戦、散華されました幾多の日豪の英霊に対し、謹んで哀悼の詞を捧げます。
As we are set to leave the port of Darwin after completing the multilateral joint exercise hosted by the Royal Australian Navy, I would like to offer my respect to all Australians and Japanese who fought hard and sacrificed their lives for their countries in World War Ⅱ.
今から約７０年前、１９４２年１月２１日、ダーウィン沖に機雷を敷設し哨戒任務中であった帝国海軍潜水艦「伊－１２４号」は、米豪連合軍艦艇の爆雷攻撃により沈没し、岸上艦長を含む８０名の乗組員が今も約４０マイル沖合いの海底に眠ったままです。
On January 21, 1942, LCDR Kishigami, the Commanding Officer of a Japanese submarine “I-124”, and his 79 crew members were engaged in mine laying and patrol operations when American and Australian Allied destroyers sank the submarine 40 miles off the coast of Darwin where the crew now rest.
その約１ヵ月後、１９４２年２月１９日、ダーウィン港に停泊中であった多くのオーストラリア艦船は、帝国海軍航空母艦から次々と飛び立った航空機の空爆により甚大な被害を受け、ここフォートヒルワーフにおいても徴用船ネプチューンが沈没し、多くの乗組員の尊い犠牲が払われました。
On February 19, 1942, a month after the sinking of “I-124”, many Royal Australian Navy and merchant ships were moored in the port of Darwin.
Air raids from four nearby Japanese Imperial Navy aircraft carriers inflicted massive damage upon the ships.
Here in Fort Hill Wharf, the air raids sank MV Neptuna and took the lives of her crew.
互いに祖国の勝利を信じ、この海域に散っていかれました英霊の胸中を思うとき、断腸の念、ひとしお胸に迫るものがあります。
It breaks my heart when I think about what was in the mind of those sailors who had to fight.
Whether they were Australians or Japanese, all of them fought with the faith their country would win the war.
今日、皆様方のご加護により、日本とオーストラリアの友好関係は益々発展し、互いに平和を維持してまいりました。
日豪それぞれの祖国のために戦った英霊に哀悼の意を表すとともに、今後の日豪関係のさらなる友好と発展を誓い、先の大戦で散華されました英霊がとこしえに安らかに眠られんことをここに、謹んでお祈り申し上げます。
Because of your support, friendly relations between Japan and Australia continue to grow.
As a result, our nations pursue and maintain peace. Furthermore, I hope Japan-Australia relations will flourish in the years to come.
I humbly express my deep respect to those who fought and died for their countries. May their spirits rest in peace forever.
